Which is kind of weird because on the one hand is made from oil which is a precious fossil fuel we’re running out of and on the other end it ends up on places in the world where we don’t want it, damaging our planet and environment In fact research says that less than 10 percent of our plastic actually gets recycled, so of all the new plastic we make a lot of it ends up in the wrong place. Time to get recycling, right? So plastic often looks and feels the same, but it’s probably not. In fact there are dozens of different types of plastic out there, but you can narrow it down into two main categories. So, for instance, this bowling ball is a thermal set, and this lunch box is a thermal plastic. And the biggest difference, is that the lunch box you can always remelt it so when you’re done with this you can melt the plastic again, and turn it back to another shape or its original shape.

And this bowling ball is made from a very hard polyurethane. It’s molded into this shape and afterwards you cannot remelt it. This is basically a block of material which you cannot really do anything with. And this one you can just remelt it and reuse it again. And luckily about 80% of the plastic is made from this type, which is good thing because this one is easy to recycle. In fact it often has this little logo on the bottom, which says that you can recycle it And this is what the plastic looked like as a raw material: small pellets that are used over the entire plastic industry to create new things.

But even within this group of plastic there are many different types. But we can narrow them down again into several main groups, which basically all the plastic around you is made from. And each of them has their own difficult technical name like “Polypropylene”, “Polystyrene”. I don’t know where they make it so difficult, so often the shorter version is being used. It’s hard to tell the difference between two types of plastic. I mean they can have the same color, feel the same, and look the same but still being a different type. And this is actually the main problem with plastic how to separate the different types of plastic because they all have different properties, behaviors and melting temperatures. But there are a few tricks on how to get this done. Trick number one (and this is by far the easiest one): is look for the logo. If it has a recycle logo, you can see which type of plastic it is so this one is made from polypropylene.

But as you can imagine, there’s a lot of different plastics out there; a lot of things to remember so this goes wrong, and isn’t 100% accurate.

Another one is to look at the visual properties. For instance, polystyrene has this breakable sound, whereas polyethylene is more flexible and tough kind of plastic. And then there’s another technique which is called “the flame technique”. We don’t recommend this, but it’s a technique, so we’re going to show you. For instance, if you burn plastic you get a little flame, so, this one has a nice yellow flame. If we’re going to fire up this one… So and this has, like, this dark smoke, which is polystyrene. Like I said, we don’t recommend this technique. Yeah, it’s not nice. The last one is the floating technique. This is quite an interesting one, so, let’s say you have a lot of different types of plastic, mixed.

You can put them in the water, and some will sink and some will float. And then we’re going to add some water. So you can see some plastic floats, some will sink. But if we add some salt… So as you can see: the polypropylene and polyethylene floats, and the PET (Polyester or Polyethylene Terephthalate) sinks. And you can do this with other types of plastic as well by changing the density of the water, And all the more detailed information: like the different densities, or the different flame colors, or the visual properties you can download in our download pack.

So as we just learned there are many different types of plastic out there, and the ones that you can recycle basically all work according to the same principle. You need some heating and some pressure to mold it into something new and that’s pretty much the basic start of the entire plastic industry. They all work according to these principles. But they have a lot of variation, and by making a different combination of these techniques they can make a whole range of different products. With Americans producing 160 million tons of solid waste a year — that’s better than three pounds per person per day — landfills are beginning to overflow. And while plastics account for only 7% of those garbage heaps by weight, they make up 13% of their volume. Anything, even a mailbox post, that can reduce that amount of trash is something to be wished for.

The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW), the world's largest producer of polyethylene, and Crystalsev, one of Brazil's largest ethanol players announced plans for a world-scale facility to manufacture polyethylene from sugar cane. Polyethylene is the most widely used of all plastics and can be found in all manner of everyday products, from food packaging, milk jugs and plastic containers to pipes and liners.

Under the terms, Dow and Crystalsev will form a joint venture in Brazil to design and build, the first integrated facility of its scale in the world. It is expected to start production in 2011, and will have a capacity of 350,000 metric tons.

The venture will combine Dow's leading position in polyethylene with Crystalsev's know-how, and experience in ethanol to meet the needs of Dow's customers in Brazil and what will likely be international interest. "Meet the needs of Dow's customers in Brazil," this is huge. Rather than producing plastic from petroleum and shipping it to Brazil like it does now, Dow will produce it there for pennies, and sell it locally to the same people.

Crystalsev is a 100% Brazilian group that commercializes products made from sugar cane through three areas: providing of services to mills; commercialization of sugar and alcohol; and trading - purchase, resale and management of assets. The Group produces 1.8 million tons of sugar, which corresponds to 8% of all sugar manufactured in Brazil, and employs 30,000 people. Crystalsev operates in several regions in the country through 13 companies that, together, form the second major producer of sugar cane in Brazil.

The new facility will use ethanol derived from sugar cane, an renewable feedstock, to produce ethylene, the raw material required to make polyethylene. Ethylene is traditionally produced using either naphtha or natural gas liquids, both of which are petroleum products. It is estimated that the new process will produce significantly less CO2 compared to the traditional polyethylene manufacturing process.

Now, this brings up a few questions. Since Dow will be using ethanol, will they eventually branch into ethanol production in Brazil? Will they export some of the ethanol when the market dictates to the U.S. duty free? ADM is actively looking for a Brazilian partner for ethanol production, will this joint venture possibly lead to an Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE:ADM), Dow venture? The possibilities here are endless.

Let's look at future earnings. The end of this decade should bring in significant, prolonged earnings from the Saudi joint venture, the China project, this Brazilian one and the Lybian venture announced earlier. All these have been announced in just the past four months and they will not only bring in additional earnings, they will do so while dramatically decreasing and stabilizing input costs, currently Dow largest wild-card in relation to earnings. In his last letter to shareholders Liveris claimed 2007 would "be a significant year" in the history of Dow.

So far, so good and we are only halfway through.

In this article, I will be looking at the top 4 companies on this list. The Players

Waste Management Inc (NYSE:WM) has been in operation for 45 years, has about 42,700 employees and has a market cap of $27.86B. And just as a warning: this isn't the most exciting stock. This is the largest company in the industry, and is known for consistent (though slight) dividend growth, share buybacks with no regard for price, and general managerial excellence. I think Waste Management took the phrase, "haste makes waste" too seriously in setting their dividend growth rate, but how can you complain when they've increased dividends for the past 13 years? Shareholders who value sleep love these guys. (Caleb Jensema wrote a terrific article on WM back in January)

Waste Connections (NYSE:WCN) has been around for 19 years, has about 6,800 employees and has a market cap of $8.55B. As noted above, they announced a merger with Canadian company Progressive Waste Solutions back in January. Under the structure of the deal, Waste Connections was actually "acquired" by Progressive Waste Solutions to take advantage of the lower tax rate. However, this does not look like an inversion just for the sake of inversion. The two companies have very similar operations, and expect significant benefit from synergy in the coming years. The benefit from the inversion was lessened by the new inversion rules announced by the Treasury on April 4th.

Clean Harbors (NYSE:CLH) was founded in 1980, has about 8,300 employees, and has a market cap of $3.12B. The company, like most in the industry, has grown through extensive acquisitions. For example, their 2012 acquisition of Safety-Kleen made them the largest "re-refiner and recycler of used oil in the world and the largest provider of parts cleaning and environmental services to commercial, industrial, and automotive customers in North America. Clean Harbors has a more diverse range of services than most companies in this industry. They are involved in chemical packing, transformer services, emergency response, lodging, seismic services, surface rentals, directional boring, and a number of other lines of business.

Republic Services, Inc (NYSE:RSG) is the closest rival to Waste Management in this industry, despite being founded in 1998. This is a bit misleading, as they were spun off from waste disposal firm Republic Industries, which was founded in 1981. The company has about 36,000 employees, a market cap of $17.18B, and actually has more collections operations (427 to 413) than its larger competitor. Republic Services had shown unparalleled dedication to solving environmental issues in the U.S.

Financial Comparison

As stated above, Waste Management is the largest company in the industry, followed by Republic Services, Waste Connections, and then Clean Harbors. The PEs and yields of Waste Management, Republic Services, and Clean Harbors have historically been fairly consistent (except for the anomaly in2014-15).

Waste Management and Republic Services Prices and PEs:

Waste Connections doesn't have a relevant PE (the table above should say N/A rather than 0) because they lost money in the last 12 months. Clean Harbors had an adjusted net loss of $12.9M ($0.22) per share. Their PE of 102.75 is actually 11.25% below its historical average, so one could argue they are trading cheap (I won't).

  • When asked to comment on the subject, Waste Connections and Clean Harbors responded:

Republic Services is has been putting significant investments into developing new technologies and starting initiatives across the country. The company plows back about 45% of earnings. Compare this to Waste Management's 29% retention and we begin to see why Republic Services has been more successful in terms of innovation. Clean Harbors and Waste Connections take a totally different approach to dividends. Waste Connections pays out about 20% of its earnings as dividends, while Clean Harbors pay no dividend. Waste Connections has be achieving growth through acquisitions. Rather than seeking out innovative projects, they try to buy them (this is not unique to them). Clean Harbors and Waste Management have both engaged in share buybacks recently, with Waste Management making these purchases while their stock is at an all-time high.

Waste Expo 2016

Everyone's been waiting to hear the highlights from the 2016 Waste Expo in Las Vegas. No? You weren't? Well here they are anyways. This week from Monday through Thursday was the largest waste management industry event of the year. The latest products and technologies were on display. Two of the most prominent themes at the conference were technology and innovation and the cost of recycling.

Technology and Innovation

Republic Services has been an industry leader in technological advancement: working on converting landfill gas to energy, solar energy products, and a natural gas vehicle fleet. This is in line with a broad industry (and global for that matter) trend towards sustainability. Here are a few highlights from their sustainablity plan:

According to Waste360, there was a wide array of technology on display at the expo. "The technologies and approaches differ. But in general the trend is that there are an increasing number of options for having sensing devices that can be placed in waste containers to help communicate to hauler and generators how full the bins are."

OnePlus CEO Klaus Voss, who was at the expo this week, said, "The capital intensive variable in the business is hauling. Servicing the volume of waste and the number of carts in the field more efficiently is a big opportunity for savings."

Cost of Recycling

Last year, Waste Management Chief Executive David Steiner said:

Recycling is in a crisis. It isn't profitable for us, and we have to react to that by shutting down plants.

Waste Management is the largest recycler in North America. If they are not able to benefit from economies of scale enough to make recycling profitable, we have a serious issue on our hands.

A major issue across the board is that people are putting things in their recycling bins and public bins that cannot be recycled. This is forcing waste management companies to spend more and more time sorting through the piles, which is very expensive.

Yon Lambert, the director of transportation and environmental services in Alexandria, Virginia said:

In the past, we had been telling people that, if they had any questions, put it into the recycling stream. Now, we're recognizing that making recycling work actually requires some recognition that it's not as easy as we once communicated it to be.

Back in March, Waste Management entered into an agreement with the City of Houston to process and resell its recyclables for the next two years. The company will receive $90 per ton for its efforts for a total of about $5.76 million. The original deal proposed by Waste Management was a six-year contract worth $18 million, but they settled for the smaller deal because of one major concession: No glass. Waste Management is promised 75% of Houston's recycling stream, none of which will include glass. The mayor of Houston says "glass generally breaks during collection and transportation to the processing site. It is also unduly destructive to the processing equipment" (HPM). This will result in a lower processing cost for Waste Management, and may ultimately serve as a model for enticing companies with recycling infrastructure to make deals.

In addition to the lack of sorting by consumers weighing on profitability, low commodity prices have been affecting recyclers' bottom lines. Plastic is derived from oil, and the recently low crude prices are "an incentive to make fresh plastic. That means recycled plastic becomes less attractive because of the work it requires to sort and clean it. All told, lower energy prices are creating a perfect storm for waste management companies." Crude is up over 80% from its low earlier this year, but it is still in a range that adversely affects the economics of recycling. Steiner also cited aluminum, copper, iron, and paper commodity prices, which have fallen since 2012, as causes for their unprofitable recycling operations.

Augmenting the problem is the strength of the dollar, particularly relative to the yuan. This fact coupled with the slowdown in the Chinese economy is weighing on profits, as China accounted for a large percentage of U.S. international recycled materials sales last year.

Waste360 noted that the Paper & Plastic Recycling Trends and Markets session had some extremely valuable insights from industry leaders. Patty Moore, president of the Moore Recycling Associates said, "I think that the issues of global oversupply of virgin material are temporary because we expect to see some normalization that will take some of the older, lower-efficiency facilities offline. The normalization we expect will hopefully help bring value back into the recycling system."

The problem Patty touches on here is the same problem being caused by the low crude prices. The market is being saturated with new plastic, decreasing the cost of these "virgin" materials, and making recycled plastic less desirable.

Conclusion

The recession-proof demand in this industry will keep the oligopoly in business for the foreseeable future. The biggest risks are regulatory in nature, but they do not seem great enough to drive any of these companies out. Recycling has become a huge issue in the United States, and municipalities are left scrambling to figure out what to do with their recycling when a company like Waste Management decides they will no longer pick it up because it isn't profitable. My favorite part about this industry is the diversity of the customer base. Waste Management, for example, has "over 21 million customers, none of which make up more than 1% of total revenue" (Jensema). Unless people stop creating garbage, I like this industry to provide a consistent return for investors.

And no doubt there’s a desperate need for someone to do something with what the industry calls post-consumer (used) plastics. Recycled plastic materials are in demand.

And while plastics account for only 7% of those garbage heaps by weight, they make up 13% of their volume. Anything, even a mailbox post, that can reduce that amount of trash is something to be wished for.

Determining the optimum barrel-temperature profile is one of the most important tasks in extrusion. A barrel-temperature profile (BTP) that works well on one extruder may not work on the same type of extruder right next to it, even if the extruders process the same plastic, use the same screw and die design, and run at the same rpm. So in an extrusion plant with many extruders, trying to run them all at the same BTP will likely result in below-optimum performance for some extruders.

There are many possible reasons for this. One is the depth of temperature sensors in the barrel. If one extruder uses shallow-well thermocouples and another uses deep-well thermocouples, this will result in different temperatures on the inside wall of the barrel, where it really counts. The BTP is also affected by die head pressure, screw and barrel wear, ambient conditions (air temperature and humidity), and resin inlet temperature and moisture level.

Finding the correct BTP requires observing how the process reacts when changes occur. Some changes are intentional and obvious, such as a change in screw speed or barrel setpoint. A BTP that works well at 50 rpm screw speed may not work well at 120 rpm. When a new screw is installed in an extruder, particularly a screw with different flight geometry, the BTP will need adjustment.

Some process changes are unintentional and not necessarily obvious--for instance, when the extruder performance changes as a result of screw wear or buildup of contamination on the screen pack.


Start with these general temperature guidelines for the three major sections of the extruder--feed, transition, and metering. In the feed section, set barrel temperature to maximize motor load and minimize pressure variation at the die. In the transition section, set barrel temperature to minimize melt-temperature variation at the die. In the metering section, set barrel temperature to the manufacturer's suggested melt temperature for the resin--but keep in mind that discharge melt temperature can be significantly higher than barrel temperatures in the metering section.

For a non-vented, single-stage extruder, the feed section consists of temperature zone 1 and sometimes part of zone 2. The metering section usually consists of the last two temperature zones. Temperature zones in between make up the transition section. Short extruders (24:1 to 26:1 L/D) usually have three or four zones in all. Longer extruders (30-32:1 L/D) typically have five to six zones, while long extruders (34:1 L/D and longer) may have six to 10 zones.

Typical processing temperatures for semi-crystalline plastics are generally about 50[degrees] to 75[degrees] C above the melting point of the resin. For instance, HDPE with a melting point of 130 C is typically processed at 180 to 205 C or higher. If the resin is susceptible to degradation, it may be processed closer to its melting point.

Amorphous plastics are usually processed about 100[degrees] C above their glasstransition temperature (Tg). For instance, PS with a Tg around 100 C is typically processed at around 200 C.

If standard or typical barrel-temperature profiles do not result in acceptable performance, the temperature settings will have to be optimized. The only technically correct way to find the best BTP is to perform a Design of Experiments (DOE) procedure incorporating all barrel-temperature zones. Ideally, this should be done with a full-factorial DOE because the various barrel-temperature zones can have interaction effects. A full-factorial DOE is reasonable when there are only three or four barrel zones. When a two-level factorial design is performed with four factors or barrel-temperature zones, this will require 16 ([2.sup.4]) experiments. If each experiment takes 30 min, this will take a total of 8 hr--a full shift.

When there are five or more zones, a full-factorial DOE is too time-consuming and expensive to be practical in most situations, especially with a large extruder. For instance, a two-level factorial design with six factors or zones requires 64 experiments (26), each taking 30 min, for a total of 32 hr.

Therefore, the One-at-a-Time Experiments (OTE) method is the most commonly used way to optimize BTP. It usually uses small (5[degrees] C) temperature changes. But this method is also slow and expensive. Each time a temperature change is made, you have to wait until the barrel zone reaches setpoint and the extruder stabilizes. Reaching setpoint can take 5 to 10 min on a small (20- to 40-mm) extruder or 30 to 60 min on a large extruder (over 100 mm diam.). It can take another 5 to 10 min for a small extruder to stabilize, or 30 to 60 min for a large extruder. So making five or six changes can take an entire day or longer for a large extruder. The OTE method also cannot uncover interaction effects.

WHY DYNAMIC OPTIMIZATION

A third method of optimizing BPT is Dynamic Optimization, which involves making large temperature changes (20 to 40[degrees] C or more) and tracking the dynamic response of the extruder. This method is a fast but robust method of barrel-temperature optimization that works even for very large extruders operating in a production environment. This method has been used for many years, and proven effective in a wide variety of extrusion operations, though it still isn't widely enough known.

When the setpoint of a barrel-temperature zone is changed by large amounts, the temperature-control system may not achieve the set temperature. For instance, if the setpoint for zone 3 is changed from 220 C down to 160 C, actual barrel temperature may only go down to 184 C. If the cooling system is on full blast at this condition, the barrel temperature cannot be reduced further even if the setpoint is put much lower. The only way to achieve further temperature reduction would be to increase cooling capacity or to change process conditions like reducing screw speed.

As an example of Dynamic Optimization on a 100-mm extruder, suppose zone 1 barrel temperature is changed from 200 C down to 150 C. It may take the extruder 15 to 20 min to bring the actual barrel temperature down to 150 C. With Dynamic Optimization the actual barrel temperature is recorded every 15 to 30 sec, or whatever time interval allows accurate determination of the extruder's behavior. (When a data-acquisition system is avail able, the data are recorded automatically with a sampling frequency high enough to record the transient behavior accurately.)

At each barrel-temperature recording, the corresponding melt-pressure variation is recorded. This allows construction of a graph of pressure variation versus barrel temperature. The lowest pressure variation is reached at between 160 C and 165 C. The pressure variation increases rapidly at temperatures below 155 C and less rapidly above 170 C. That means that zone 1 temperature should be set at 165 C to avoid the steep part of the curve between 150 C and 155 C.

It is possible that under steady-state conditions, the pressure variation is not the same as under transient conditions. If the steady-state pressure variation at 165 C is much higher than the transient pressure variation, it may be necessary to do a few OTE runs around 165 C. In most cases, however, this won't be necessary, and the extruder will run well at the setpoint determined by Dynamic Optimization.

Zone 1 barrel temperature in many cases has the strongest effect on extrusion process stability. So it is often not necessary to do further experiments with the BTP. In a 100-mm extruder, therefore, it may be possible to determine the optimum BTP in less than an hour.

I like Berry Plastics Group (NYSE:BERY) for its upside potential from its new Versalite insulated cups and its growth opportunities from M&A and international expansion. Also, downside risks are limited, given Berry Plastics' stable end-markets and low customer concentration. In addition, Berry Plastics' deleveraging efforts should be rewarding in terms of a lower financial risk profile. Notwithstanding the quality of the company and its growth strategies, Berry Plastics is not an ideal investment at current valuations, since its share price has rallied by 39% in the past 52 weeks. My three-year target price of $37.39, assuming that a 16.85 times forward P/E multiple is applied to its forecasted fiscal 2017 EPS of $2.22, implies a mere 9% upside. Investors should look forward to opportunities to accumulating Berry Plastics, in the event of a pullback in its share price on higher resin prices or other short-term issues.

Company Description

Berry Plastics is a leading manufacturer of value-added plastic consumer packaging and engineered materials. It operates in four product segments: Rigid Open Top, Rigid Close Top, Engineered Materials, and Flexible Packaging, which accounted for 22%, 30%, 29% and 19% of its fiscal 2014 (year ended September) revenues respectively. Among the four product segments, the Rigid Close Top segment is the most profitable with the highest adjusted EBITDA margin of 20%, followed by the Rigid Open Top (17% EBITDA margin), Engineered Materials (15% EBITDA margin), and Flexible Packaging (12% EBITDA margin) segments. As of February 2015, Berry Plastics boasted a manufacturing footprint of close to 100 facilities largely located in the U.S.

Downside Protection From Stable End-Market Demand And Superior Customer Bargaining Power

Most industrial manufacturing companies typically suffer from risks associated with either a down cycle in its end markets or the loss of its key customers. Berry Plastics is differentiated from most of its peers with respect to downside protection for investors, given its high proportion of sales from stable end markets and its relative bargaining power over customers.

Berry Plastics derives approximately 70% of its revenues from stable, non-cyclical, consumer-oriented end markets. More specifically, the food & beverage, health care, personal care and household chemicals industries contribute around 41%, 14%, 10% and 4% of its sales. As a result, Berry Plastics is less susceptible to a decline in revenues in the case of deteriorating economic conditions compared with certain of its peers which derive a greater portion of their revenues from cyclical, industrial end markets.

Other key differentiating factors for Berry Plastics include its low customer concentration and longstanding customer relationships, which are indicators of relatively strong customer bargaining power. Berry Plastics' 10 largest customers accounted for only 17% of its fiscal 2014 sales; while no single customer represented more than 2% of its top line. Therefore, a loss of any single customer does not have a significant negative impact on Berry Plastics. This also implies that Berry Plastics has greater leeway to raise prices if needed, something which I will discuss in greater detail below. In addition, Berry Plastics also benefits from its longstanding relationships with customers, something which it has highlighted multiple times in its fiscal 2014 10-K. In its most recent 10-K, Berry Plastics wrote that it has "long-standing supply relationships with many of the nation's leading food and consumer products companies," and "our sales team monitors customer service in an effort to ensure that we remain the primary supplier for our key accounts. This strategy requires us to develop and maintain strong relationships with our customers, including end users as well as distributors and converters." It is noteworthy that Berry Plastics works very hard to be the key (or even sole) supplier for its clients to grab a greater share of client spend and also to further increase customer switching costs.

Low Oil Prices A Short-Term Boost But Company Maintained Profitability Historically Despite Volatile Resin Prices

The significant decline in crude oil prices from above $100 to the $50-$60 range in the past months has exerted downward pressure on resin prices, since crude oil is a base feedstock for many resins. More specifically, the prices of Berry Plastics' primary resins, polypropylene (largely for the rigid segments) and polyethylene (largely for the flexible segments), have continued their downward trend in January 2015. According to Plastic News, polypropylene prices fell by 10 cents per pound in January, while the prices for polyethylene saw a decline of 4 cents per pound in the same month. Berry Plastics should see an uptick in its operating margins starting from Q2 FY2015, as the positive impact of the price declines for polypropylene and polyethylene will only be felt by March 2015, given the timing lag for price pass-throughs. More significantly, the increased cost competitiveness of Berry Plastics resulting from lower resin prices will allow it to compete more aggressively in taking market share from other plastic substitutes such as metal, glass and paper.

Since my investing style focuses largely bottom-up fundamentals, I do not want to get into the business of predicting future crude oil prices. Therefore, I am comforted by the fact that Berry Plastics has maintained relatively stable operating margins historically notwithstanding resin price volatility. For the past four years since 2011, polypropylene prices have fluctuated between 70 and 100 cents per pound, while the prices for polyethylene have been in the 65-80 cents per pound range during the same period. Despite the volatility in resin prices, Berry Plastics has managed to maintain its trailing twelve months EBITDA margins in the 15%-17% range. This is largely attributable to Berry Plastics' ability to pass on most of the resin price movements to its customers in a timely manner through contractual pass-through mechanisms. Approximately three-quarters of its sales (based on volume in terms of per pound sold) have an average one-month lag between sales price change and resin cost impact on its income statement.

Resin is a key input cost for Berry Plastics, accounting for approximately half of its cost of goods sold. Berry Plastics' ability to pass on resin price increases to its clients in a timely manner makes it less vulnerable to any significant volatility in resin prices.

New Product Versalite Is A Game Changer With Tremendous Upside Potential

Berry Plastics has traditionally been a company with a strong history and track record of product innovation. Berry Plastics' latest innovation, and possibly game changer in the market, is its Versalite technology. Cups, which are able to deliver high standards of thermal management, performance and environmental friendliness, have been on the wish lists of food & beverage companies for a long time. This is because while paper cups are recyclable, they typically do not retain heat well. On the other hand, although polystyrene cups have strong thermal management properties, they are non-biodegradable. Following six years of development, Berry Plastics has introduced the Versalite line of insulated cups. Firstly, Versalite insulated cups, made from polypropylene, are fully recyclable, and therefore have a lesser impact on the environment compared with other hot cup options. In addition, the beverage is kept hot without the need for a sleeve. Secondly, Versalite insulated cups have similar heat retention capabilities as their polystyrene counterparts. Thirdly, Versalite insulated cups also offer superior performance with crack resistant properties and the ability to showcase high definition graphics on their surface as part of branding.

Berry Plastics is making good progress with respect to the commercialization of its Versalite technology. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014, it started the second phase of testing of Versalite insulated cups at Dunkin' Donuts outlets in Vermont, Massachusetts, New York and California run by Dunkin' Brands (NASDAQ:DNKN). The feedback was positive, going by CEO Jonathan Rich's comments at the Q4 FY2014 earnings call where he said:

I would say that the experience and the feedback we are getting from consumers at Dunkin is very similar to the feedback that we had in our own test programs and from the feedback we are getting from other customers that we have for Versalite. So customers have a very positive view on Versalite cups from a performance standpoint.

In the first quarter of fiscal 2015, the roll-out of Versalite insulated cups was further boosted by a ban on non-recyclable plastic foam containers and cups in New York that will come into effect by July 2015. CEO Jonathan Rich confirmed the positive impact of the ban at the Q1 FY2015 earnings call by saying that "the commercial interest in Versalite technology has certainly escalated."

Growth From M&A And International Expansion Opportunities

Apart from the organic growth opportunities associated with the introduction of innovative products such as Versalite insulated cups, Berry Plastics' inorganic growth strategy is equally promising. Berry Plastics has executed 38 acquisitions over the past thirty years, implying a great deal of experience in integrating new target companies and extracting merger synergies. More importantly, there are two differentiating factors of Berry Plastics' M&A strategy that separates itself from its peers. One of them is the price discipline that Berry Plastics has adhered to. The average EV/EBITDA acquisition multiple that Berry Plastics has paid for its past 10 acquisitions is 6.5 times (relatively low), excluding the impact of any forecasted synergies. Another key factor is Berry Plastics' cost synergies realized from past acquisitions have historically been equally split between the operations, purchasing and selling, general & administrative (SG&A) expense categories. This suggests that Berry Plastics has been able to successfully improve cost efficiencies of the acquired entities along different dimensions. Looking ahead, management guided at the recent earnings call that they will continue to "execute value accretive acquisitions that have historically brought us success."

International expansion is another key area of potential for Berry Plastics, as it only generated a mere 4% of its sales outside the U.S. in fiscal 2014. Historically, Berry Plastics has found it hard to venture overseas where the incumbents in the respective foreign countries and geographic regions are protected from competition by high switching costs resulting from long-term existing relationships. Berry Plastics' new Versalite insulated cups could be critical to its penetration of international markets, as a vastly superior, disruptive product like Versalite has a better chance of overcoming companies' resistance to product/supplier switching. In a response to a question at the Q1 FY2015 earnings call about the possibility of introducing Versalite in overseas markets, CEO Jonathan Rich commented:

I think as it becomes transparent who are some of the customers that we're working here with, you will probably discover that they are not only located here but also have operations around the world. So a great place to start would be to work with the customers that we're already working with here. But as I've mentioned many times, here in the U.S. on a per capita basis we actually consume less coffee per person than many other parts of the world. So we think Versalite is not just a U.S. based technology but has the opportunity eventually to translate around the world and that will be a high-quality problem to face.

Potential Catalyst

One near-term potential catalyst for Berry Plastics is the further reduction of its financial leverage.

In the past few years, Berry Plastics has significantly improved its financial risk profile, by employing its excess free cash flow to pay down debt. It reduced its leverage from 7.3 times debt-to-EBITDA in December 2010 to 5.5 times debt-to-EBITDA in December 2012. Berry Plastics further lowered its leverage to 4.5 times debt-to-EBITDA as of 1Q FY2015, after it voluntarily repaid $100 million of principal on its term loan in November last year. Going forward, Berry Plastics is targeting to reduce its leverage to 4 times debt-to-EBITDA by end of fiscal 2015, while its long term leverage target remains at 2-4 times debt-to-EBITDA. I expect a positive re-rating of Berry Plastics' valuation multiples, as it strengthen its balance sheet and reduces its credit risks. The key downside risk relates to its ability to manage the delicate balance between acquisitions and financial prudence. Berry Plastics needs to meet its deleveraging targets, while employing capital (debt and equity) in the most efficient manner to fund value-accretive acquisitions.

Target Price

I arrive at a three-year target price of $37.39 for Berry Plastics, assuming that a 16.85 times forward P/E multiple is applied to its forecasted fiscal 2017 EPS of $2.22. I have used the median forward P/E trading multiples of Berry Plastics' packaged peers as my chosen valuation multiple. These peers include AptarGroup (NYSE:ATR), Ball Corporation (NYSE:BLL), Bemis Company (NYSE:BMS), Crown Holdings (NYSE:CCK), Graphic Packaging (NYSE:GPK), MeadWestvaco Corporation (MWV), Owens Illinois (NYSE:OI), Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE:SEE), Silgan Holdings (NASDAQ:SLGN) and Sonoco Products (NYSE:SON). I assume that Berry Plastics grows its top line by a 3.5% CAGR between fiscal 2014 and 2017 driven by the increased adoption of Versalite insulated cups and future acquisitions, and also improves its net profit margin from 4.1% in FY2014 to 4.8% in FY2017. This gives rise to my estimated 2017 EPS of $2.22. My target price implies a 9% upside from Berry Plastics' share price of $34.31 as of February 27, 2015. While I like Berry Plastics as a company and business, I will advise investors to wait for a better entry price considering the narrow margin of safety at current valuations.

Panera has become extremely popular, on the heels of Cosi's (NASDAQ:COSI) lackluster performance stock-wise and business-wise over the past few years. Panera, on the surface, appears to be almost a perfect opportunity at an investment in a steadily growing company. However, here's a reason I'd be taking profits or opening a short position in Panera. Here's a couple of Panera's dirty little secrets:

Panera's Food is Perceived As Healthy, But is Really Far From It

Paired with the feeling of comfort food, Panera boasts on its website about the quality of the ingredients it uses. It talks about its antibiotic-free chicken and quality ingredients. The general sentiment of Panera patrons is that they're getting fresh-made food that's healthy for them. People don't see it along the same lines as fast food, and that's one of the reasons it's becoming so popular. Panera has consciously worked to move away from the stigmas of fast food, similar to the way Subway has done, and it's paid dividends.

Panera does bake the breads and bakery items fresh every night. I've seen the bakers come and go before open and after close. There is no doubt about how fresh those items are, and I'm not contesting that.

It's just that the "everything is fresh and healthy at Panera" reality of the situation is a bit different. Take the soups, for example. Soup is great comfort food, but anyone who peeks over the counter while waiting for their food sees that the "homemade" soups, while made by Panera somewhere, aren't made on site; they're reheated on site. I've noticed them being pulled from and put into thermalizers, which means they're shipped to your local store frozen. A thermalizer for soup works exactly the same way you steam your frozen broccoli sides from the grocery store in boiling water. It's a big huge vat of boiling water that thaws out and then heats soups before it is moved on to the serving line.

While perusing the Panera nutrition facts, I was absolutely floored when I discovered some of the commonly ordered menu items at Panera appear to be absolutely horrible for you. Here's a couple of eye-popping examples:

The "You Pick 2" is the most common thing I've seen people eat during lunchtime at my local Panera. When combining a soup & salad, sandwich & salad, or sandwich & soup combination -- in addition to a side and a drink -- it is a bit too easy to come up with combinations that easily yield 1,000+ calories, 2,000+mg of sodium, 40+ g of fat and 100+ g of carbohydrates. Yes, there are healthier choices you could make, but more often than not the customers I witness ordering lunches while I'm there just seem to assume that everything is healthy. The fact is, I've had healthier lunches at McDonald's.

This is going to be an issue that comes up in the future; the inevitable equating of Panera with healthy food is going to have to be addressed. The company has one shot to avoid this, and it's being proactive about this before the general public finds out on its own and a "Super Size Me" like shadow is inevitably cast over the quality of food at the company.

Panera, Like Many Others, is Still Susceptible to Big Market Changes

I just used this same argument in my analysis of Yum Brands (NYSE:YUM). Yum has a very similar Beta (0.83 vs. 0.89) and a very similar institutional ownership percentage (79% vs. 85%). In my latest article about Yum, I wrote:

As I pointed out in my last macro-view article entitled "The End is Near : Why the Bull Market is Finished," I contend that we are in the extreme late stages of this bull run that began in 2009 and that we're due for a correction; whether it be before another run-up or the beginning of a serious recession-style pullback.

As I said about Yum, with Panera's tendency to move in close correlation with the market in general, this is bearish news if you're like me and your macro-view on the market suggests a correction coming up. Even Cramer, earlier this week, warned investors not to nosedive into stocks. From CNBC:

If you're not already in stocks, Cramer thinks now is not the time to dive in.

There are developments in the market that he doesn't like.

"I see people all over the place right now trying to join me in the bull camp," Cramer explained. "I see people coming onto CNBC saying they were wrong; now they like the market."

Too many bulls gives Cramer pause.

"I'm seeing investors reach and chase, and as a result they've now driven the Dow Jones Industrial Average higher for eight straight days." There haven't been nine straight days of gains in the Dow since 1996.

Panera is Trading at an Aggressive P/E Ratio & Technicals Indicate a Price Dip

Panera's P/E ratio in the 20s commands consistent growth; anything short of that is going to lead to trouble for the stock. To date, the company has been opening up to 200 stores a year and has been growing sales between 10-15% per annum. If this growth does not stay very consistent, you can expect a pullback on Panera's share price.

The technicals are calling for a near-term pullback on the price as well. If you examine the chart below, you'll realize that you don't need to be a charting expert to see we are topping out again for a near-term pullback to the $155 support level. The stochastics and candlesticks together support this theory.

With the price hitting these four months of continued identical volatility, the moving averages start to creep closer and closer to one another. Like isobars dictating wind speeds on a weather map, the closer the moving averages get, the more potential for downward volatility; especially if the 50 day crosses under the 200 day.

Standing on Shaky Ground

It's going to be the position of this investor to either stay away or go short on Panera. My main argument is that the stock has been overbought and with its P/E ratio we have shifted to more risk for less reward. I'd contend that people who have been in Panera for years have already made a profit and that it's time to take some off the table. Opening a long position at this stage in the game appears risky to me.

Yes, he’s heard the career advice line from The Graduate. (“I just want to say one word to you: plastics.”)

You see, if you’re Alan E. Robbins, 43, a sense of humor comes in handy.

You need one, given what he wants to do with the rest of his life. Robbins, a charming father of five, wants to make wood obsolete. Maybe concrete, too.

It’s not quite as silly as it sounds.

Robbins is president of a company, which takes recycled plastics — milk jugs are a primary source of raw material — and turns them into everything from mailbox posts, picnic tables, and speed bumps to retaining walls at Sea World. In many areas in the country, especially the Cypress and areas near by, recycling has become much more popular.

And no doubt there’s a desperate need for someone to do something with what the industry calls post-consumer (used) plastics. Recycled plastic materials are in demand.

With Americans producing 160 million tons of solid waste a year — that’s better than three pounds per person per day — landfills are beginning to overflow. And while plastics account for only 7% of those garbage heaps by weight, they make up 13% of their volume. Anything, even a mailbox post, that can reduce that amount of trash is something to be wished for.

Nowadays recycling the plastic stuff and bags has become an important issue for the municipal authorities and state government all across the world. Recently, it was the New York City Council committee to recommend a 5 cent fee charge for every plastic bag. And there are already many states who either have posed some fine or a complete ban on the use of the plastic bags.

Being popular with the name, “white pollution”, the discarded plastic waste is certainly a dangerous waste product. It comes with an ability to break into toxic bits, which then contaminate soil and water, entering somehow back into the food chain. What is the plastic recycling process?

Molding Plastics At Home

"Why should I know how to mold my own plastic?" This isn't the first time I've heard this question. Let me explain:

You know those broken things you have laying around or even have just thrown away in the past, that when the original is pieced back together would be easy to mold a new part that could be more rigid than the broken and glued one if done correctly.

Think about how many things that you now throw away that, with a new little plastic piece, would be good as new. The statistics say that we Americans used enough plastic water bottles last year to go around the world 180 times. Most to be thrown into a land fill somewhere.

What if you had an idea to improve an existing part, or even prototyping a new part? Do you make your own jewelry from beads and such? Mold your own beads! Recycle (or upcycle in some cases) your old plastic.

Molding is the process of manufacturing by shaping pliable raw material using a rigid frame or model called a pattern. Using a pattern you create a mold. Using a mold you create a casted part, which is usually the end product.

A mold is a hollow block that is filled with a liquid-like or powdered plastic, glass, metal, or ceramic raw materials. The liquid hardens or sets inside the mold, adopting its shape. A mold is the opposite of a cast. A release agent is typically used to make removal of the hardened/set substance from the mold easier.

Using these techniques to recast old plastic can be healthier for the environment and make room for a new cottage industry that can be performed at home, as long as you do not overheat the plastic and cause more fumes that it would take to recover just throwing the plastic away.

A Common Hobby Plastic - Polymer Clay

Using a mold and fire method of polymer clay, some hobbyists are making some fantastically detailed trinkets and jewelry. Of course this is not a recycling method, it is a viable way to get started making some of the things to add detail to a piece of jewelry or art that might not be so easy with something more recyclable, such as injection or particulate molding.

The Types Of Plastic

And the best ways to reuse them

Plastic No. 1: Includes most soft drink and water bottles, peanut butter containers, salad dressing containers and food trays that can go in the oven. Most recycling programs accept these, although only 20 percent end up getting recycled. Many drink containers can be lightly heated for vacu-forming. You could use them for particulate blending if you have already brought them down to their original size before vacu-forming in to a bottle shape. Many will shrink down to original size with only a medium amount of heat. Then pour your shavings into your mold. Typically not recommended for repour, unless you have a good system for chemically melting the plastic. This may require zoning commission and OSHA inspections, not to mention, talking to the EPA about how you intend to dispose of spent chemicals.

Plastic No. 2: Milk jugs, juice bottles, bleach, cereal box liners, shampoo bottles and many household cleaner bottles fit in this group. Most curbside recyclers take these items, but not other things in this category such as shopping and trash bags. Possible to reshrink but really not a good plastic for projects unless you find a good project to use them for.

Plastic No. 3: This is PVC, used most prominently for house siding. It's also in many bottles, wire jacketing, medical equipment, windows and piping. It's not commonly recycled. But Poly Vinyl Chloride is easily glued, seamed, and particulate molded with basic glues and heated molds. The PVC I am referring to is the hardened type, found in the siding and the plastic water pipe/electrical conduit, vinyl house siding and windows and most toys. There is also the softened type used for chew toys, rubber duckies, shower curtains and other products that we use every day. But the soft PVC isn't as easy to work with as the stiffer of the types.

Plastic No. 4: This flexible plastic is used in squeezable bottles, bread bags, dry cleaning and shopping bags, clothing, furniture and carpet. Some recycling programs accept this type of plastic, and some bags can be returned to the original store. I have a page that details how one company is making a plastic board very similar to plywood from carpet, but it isn't easy to do without a purpose built heat press or oven. But with that in mind the bread bags, shopping bags, plastic clothing, and other fabric made from nylon, can be heat set the same way on a smaller scale. I have seen enterprising people make jewelry, hand bags, art, and many other things from Wal-Mart Tumbleweeds, clothes and other styles of this plastic.

Again, bear in mind, that any time you heat plastics, you are running the risk of releasing fumes that are harmful to you and those around you. Chemically melting isn't much better. Use precaution and lots of cross ventilation!

Particulate Materials

Big name for an easy process

Particulates is a fancy word for powdered. To use a particulated product means you have first ground it into a powder. Using flour to bake bread is one easy analogy. Flour is usually ground up wheat or other grain.

While the Particulate Material industry tends to focus this application in powdered metallurgy and powdered ceramics, this technology can also be applied to plastics. Many recycling systems are now using compressed powder rather than melting the material back into the raw for transporting. Foam, aluminum, paper, iron, and organics can be done this way as well.

It is well known that the integrity of chemically dissolved plastics is much weaker than virgin material, but just like the fusion of a powdered metal forms a better bond as opposed to pour molding, so does powdered plastic, resulting in stronger parts.

Many parts in gear reduction and combustion engines are now formed from particulate materials.

How can you use this to your home advantage?

For one, there is little or no chemical smell from the reactants or the release of many toxins like the mercide compounds associated with heat melting plastic for reforming. For another, it would be fairly simple to implement a simple grinding mechanism to create plastic powders from basic recyclable products, to reform into your products.

Once powdered you would compact the product into your mold and heat to just under the plastics melting point making this process less toxic than even welding the plastic with a bonding agent or heat bonding. Compacting the product in layers if properly done, could make the product stronger too. Think plywood or a bullet-proof vest.

Picture this: Recycling your own pop and water bottles? Broken toys? Old computer cases? Old electronics, such as alarm clocks and microwave doors? How about making a living by stripping down a wrecked car that you buy for a few hundred dollars. There is a huge list of plastic parts in the new cars!

Kind of helps you to realize why I hated the cash for clunkers program huh?

What can you do with this new recycling stream? Form up sculptures, like the resin cast statues, to sell on Etsy or Ebay. Of course, polystyrene and the like aren't very UV light friendly so I wouldn't recommend any outdoor products unless you could purchase the inhibitors.

But What About Recyling My Water Bottles?

Setting up my own system?

First you have to put together your mold. There are several ways this can be achieved. Many people use RTV in either poly or silicon based units to create their two part molds, by making a negative of the part you are going to copy. Take for instance the question in my comments: broken lawn darts. This casting set should likely be in three pieces to allow for easy separation of each Fletch vane. I would use the best of the darts. Oil them with WD-40 or other slippery substance that silicone would not stick to. Next smear a very liberal amount of RTV on six small pieces of quarter inch paneling board. Make sure there will not be any bubbles.

Then carefully place each wet silicone piece onto the fletch vanes, making sure that all areas of the lawn dart are covered. It would be good to mark the individual pieces now with a marker. Wait a day or so for the RTV to cure. Using a utility knife, carefully separate the individual pieces. Hindsight in my own mistakes says to make sure you have also bonded the six pieces into three with a bracing piece. This can be siliconed in place as well, but make sure that your vanes are spaced evenly. Doing this properly will help in making sure your parts align properly for the next steps.

Once you have removed the original lawn dart from the mold, use your knife to open three small weep holes on the fletching edge of each vane. Next clamp your mold pieces together in the proper order. Then using a liquified plastic solution, usually created by dissolving the proper plastic into a solution of plastic weld glue. For the thin vanes of the fletching, particulate powder can be used, but being consistent in the fletching will be next to impossible. The ideal scenario would be to use the injection method after softening the injected plastic.

With this said, metal tipped lawn darts have been banned from use in the US and Canada because of injury and death. Parts can be imported, but kits and complete units are impounded by customs. This is not something to make to sell. However, this product is like the proper handling of a handgun. Education is essential for proper use. Use common sense. Anyone participating in a lawn dart game must understand that in 1988 the Trade Commission banned them after three deaths and a seven year old boy in Indiana suffered irreparable brain damage due to the metal tipped lawn darts.

Other Ideas

You could also use a ceramic or metal form to pour your liquid or powdered plastic into then heat or let set. Now let me be clear I'm not only saying a form made from metal or ceramic. I'm saying that the form could be made of anything as long as it with stood the heat of the molding process. Scrap wood can easily be shaped by standard wood working tools and made into the negative of your part. Of course, RTV Silicone mentioned above is a decently cheap method if you do not mind the smell.

For one piece molds, there are any number of ways to vacu-form your molds, using old vacuum cleaners and ovens to soften the plastic you will use for your mold. This might be handy for making a repair piece for an old doll or action figure. It is a method used often times by the plastic modelling community for numerous parts.

The four basic types of molding (particulate, pour, vacuu-forming and injection) could be used for a long time for manufacturing.

But are you going to mass produce your project? Are you going to need a quick setting system for a more rapid production?

Injection molding alone is used for many different industries. In essence, Injection Molding is using a machine to squeeze the hot or chemically melted plastic into the mold. Injection molding mated to the particulate molding process, can speed your production considerably, as well as, as mentioned before, quite possibly making a stronger product. Keeping your equipment clean helps keep the fumes at bay as well. Stray plastic material can out gas for a long time after it has melted, and every time it is heated releases even more fumes.

I had thought that by this time I would have figured out a better system but arc heating and torch/flame heating are out of the question because of keeping the fumes to a minimum. So for now I use an array of several old soldering irons that are placed strategically around the mold to help in the even heating. However, that is a very inefficient system so I have been working on a new one that uses a small chamber and direct blown heat from that chamber.

Some More Options for Polymer Clay

Just some more thoughts on using the polymer clay for different purposes.

Pour Molding - One of the simplest methods

Now for another simple version and a very quick method available to break into the market. The RTV mold.

Using RTV silicone to build a mold from your positive is not a new process. In fact this process is as simple as pouring the RTV into a container around your object to be copied, letting it harden, then pulling the mold apart and repouring it with new plastic reagent.

Of course you can make this process easier by pouring half of your object's mold at a time that way a proper halving or even quartering can be achieved to pull the mold apart and be ready for the next pour.

It's a simple process. Really nothing to it. The same process can be used to make ceramic molds as well.

Go ahead and try it. I guarantee you will be trying to make molds of every thing once you get some experience behind you.

By the way, unless you are really lucky the first few times, you will have some mistakes. It is all part of the learning process right?

In 1904, electrical experts from around the world gathered in St. Louis. Noting that different countries had different names and units for electrical gear, they came up with the idea of creating an international industry standard so that machines made in one country could run on another country's power source. A century later, a Geneva-based group called the International Organization for Standardization, or ISO, continues that work; over the years, it has established more than 15,000 standards for everything from screw threads and the dimensions of freight containers to the JPEG digital-photo format.

More recently, ISO has been moving into a new area: setting standards for nearly every aspect of a business's operations. At last count, in 2003, more than 600,000 companies worldwide had been certified to ISO's management standards. Moreover, many of the world's largest enterprises, such as Ford, Northrop Grumman, and some branches of the federal government, demand that many of their suppliers be certified.

And therein lies a problem for entrepreneurs. Getting an ISO certification is expensive and time-consuming. What's more, doing so requires codifying nearly every aspect of business operations -- something that runs counter to the style of a fast-moving entrepreneurial organization. But if you don't go through the process, you often can't work for the big guys. "The larger customers always have it in their RFPs -- are you ISO certified?" says Eric Vetrano, senior VP of operations at Redemtech, a tech outsourcer in Columbus, Ohio. "We got shut out a few times since we didn't have a certification." Redemtech has since remedied that, obtaining its ISO 14001 certification earlier this year.

ISO began setting management standards in 1987, beginning with a framework of rules known as ISO 9000, which governed the production-line operations of major manufacturers. In 2000, the organization broadened the rules to apply to service companies as well, covering everything from hiring to market research. In 1996, it introduced a set of environmental policies known as ISO 14000, and the organization is currently considering new standards for safety, corporate social responsibility, and financial planning. To qualify for either 9000 or 14000 certification, a company must write a specific, step-by-step guide for each process, and then demonstrate that it follows the procedure. Such management rules, says Alan Bryden, ISO's secretary-general, are "distillations of good management practice worldwide for the way an organization accomplishes its work."

But can something as ephemeral as good management be distilled, analyzed, and measured like a manufacturing process? Peter Kolesar, a quality expert at Columbia Business School's Deming Center, isn't so sure. "When you try to make a simple parallel between blowing plastic bottles for detergent and running one-of-a-kind advertising campaigns, the ideas don't carry over in this nice, mechanistic way," Kolesar says.

Certification also requires a lot of time and money, which can be especially hard on entrepreneurial companies. John Huey learned just how involved the process was when he directed the ISO certification for the division of Delaware North Companies that manages guest services in tourist spots like Yosemite and Sequoia national parks. First, Huey drafted an environmental-management policy. Then, he documented the company's environmental impact, tracking water use, energy use, and food recycling. Next, he devised a plan to reduce waste, researched legal requirements for pollution and contracts, trained employees, brought in a consultant to prepare for the compliance audit, and conducted his own preliminary audit.

And still, there was more work to be done. Huey shipped 300 pages of documents to a third-party auditor for a "desk audit" (ISO doesn't certify companies itself -- 750 or so independent firms handle that) and flew the auditor to each of the five sites he was certifying. The auditor spent a day or so in each spot, interviewing employees, reviewing Delaware North's adherence to ISO, and noting any infractions. Two months later, Huey had to fly the auditor in again to confirm that the infractions had been corrected, re-interview staffers, and re-review documents. Finally, in summer 2001, 18 months and about $115,000 after the process began, the sites were certified.

The problem is, it can help drive a company to a plateau level of performance, but it will keep it at that level and, in fact, stifle improvement.

The payoff? That's a tough one. The certification probably helped Delaware North win some contracts and certainly burnished its environmental standards. Employee morale also rose, as workers took pride in their newfound status as a certified environmentally friendly operation. But as for concrete financial rewards, there has been no spike in sales, Huey says. Shiv Krishnan, CEO of Indus Corp., an IT outsourcer based in Vienna, Va., made an even bigger commitment to ISO: He spent $1 million to get his $75 million company into shape in 2003. He saw direct results, however-he landed a lucrative federal contract.

Whose experience is more typical? Three years ago, ISO's own journal, ISO Management Systems, published a study that tracked the effects of ISO 9000 certification on public companies over a 10-year period. The authors concluded that firms that were certified tended to do better than firms that were not. But they also wrote that certification "is more often a necessary condition to maintain current [financial] performance rather than a sure-fire way to improve performance." A 2002 study by the journal Total Quality Management was more pointed, finding that "ISO 9000 certification has a very limited impact on financial performance, as measured by return on assets; however, this effect dissipates quickly over time."

Nor does certification necessarily lead to a boost in quality. "There's a belief that ISO will bring a company to a standard level of performance, like a UL sticker on an electrical appliance," says Bill Robinson, who oversaw more than 50 ISO registrations at Lucent Technologies. "The problem is, it can help drive a company to a plateau level of performance, but it will keep it at that level and, in fact, stifle improvement."

Now Robinson oversees quality at EasyLink Services, a Piscataway, N.J., electronic-document company. And rather than going after ISO certifications, he prefers to work with Six Sigma, the quality system popularized by Jack Welch at General Electric. Arunas Chesonis, CEO of telecom company Paetec Communications, based in Rochester, N.Y., is also de-emphasizing ISO in favor of Six Sigma, in part because GE is both an investor and a customer. He began instituting ISO soon after starting Paetec in 1998. The standards, he says, were "a pretty powerful training tool" for new employees and signaled to potential customers "that we were the type of company that was focused on quality and process improvement." But now that his company is approaching $500 million in sales, Chesonis wants to layer Six Sigma on top of ISO. "ISO is really not one of the better systems for process improvement," he says.

Which begs the question: If an organization doesn't set the standard in its own field, why should it be able to dictate standards in yours?

Alan Robbins is betting everything he owns that the world will pay more for picnic tables, mailbox posts, and speed bumps if they’re made from recycled plastics

Yes, he’s heard the career advice line from The Graduate. (“I just want to say one word to you: plastics.”)

You see, if you’re Alan E. Robbins, 43, a sense of humor comes in handy.

You need one, given what he wants to do with the rest of his life. Robbins, a charming father of five, wants to make wood obsolete. Maybe concrete, too.

It’s not quite as silly as it sounds.

Robbins is president of a company, which takes recycled plastics — milk jugs are a primary source of raw material — and turns them into everything from mailbox posts, picnic tables, and speed bumps to retaining walls at Sea World. In many areas in the country, especially the Dana Point and areas near by, recycling has become much more popular.

And no doubt there’s a desperate need for someone to do something with what the industry calls post-consumer (used) plastics. Recycled plastic materials are in demand.

With Americans producing 160 million tons of solid waste a year — that’s better than three pounds per person per day — landfills are beginning to overflow. And while plastics account for only 7% of those garbage heaps by weight, they make up 13% of their volume. Anything, even a mailbox post, that can reduce that amount of trash is something to be wished for.

Jakarta Indonesia — A home to 9.5 million people and 6,000 tons of trash a day.

We visited one of the larger dumps in Jakarta Indonesia to see how we could work with the local leaders to discover sustainable solutions. The project is located in a slum area of Jakata where the rivers are totally polluted with discarded plastic bags and the people are unemployed, poorly educated, and without hope.

When we asked about local assets, people at the dump thought we were crazy!

“What assets?” they said. “We don’t have any assets, we live at the dump, no one has a job, and we’re broke.”

No one has a job; so that means you have a workforce ready to be employed? That discussion started them on their path to rethinking sustainability. Soon they came back with an idea to recycle plastic at the dump. We put on our business hat and talked through how to accomplish that.

We gave the leaders at the dump a loan for $5,000, that’s about seven years of salary at $2 a day! They built a small facility with four bins; 1) to wash the plastic, 2) to rinse the plastic, 3) to dry the plastic, and 4) to bundle it for the recycling plant. The group hired 17 heads of households (impacted 17 families) to collect and recycle the plastic. They paid the loan off in about seven months.

This project employed people who had no formal training but are now able to assure a quality of life for their families that was not previously possible. They can afford education for their children and medical care for their entire family. The families have also formed a strong bond and a new sense of community as a result of the work they do together. In addition, the Trash Recycling Plant is cleaning the rivers and helping the environment, which is good for the entire community.
